Common Landscape Design Mistakes to Avoid

Our team at RC Pro Studios has been working in the landscaping industry for over 10 years, and in that time, we have seen our fair share of landscape design mistakes. We want to help you make your landscape design as successful as possible, and to do that we have put together a list of the most common landscaping mistakes that we’ve seen, and provided tips for how to avoid them.

Common Landscape Design Mistakes to Avoid

  • Poor Plant Placement- One mistake that people often make when it comes to landscape design is placing plants in the wrong location. For example, many people plant trees and shrubs too close to their homes—while the plants may look lovely, their roots are likely to damage your underground utilities or even your foundation. In addition, people often place plants in positions that will not provide the right amount of shade or sunlight for them to thrive.
  • Neglecting Irrigation- Another mistake that we often see in landscape design is neglecting to consider irrigation. While your plants may look lovely and healthy now, they will not remain that way unless they are consistently watered. In our experience, people often overestimate their commitment to watering their plants by hand, so we recommend that you invest in a great irrigation system from the start.
  • Not Considering Lifestyle- A third mistake that people make when designing landscapes is not considering their own lifestyle and how they will actually use their outdoor space. Some types of landscape design are not suited for anyone with pets, young children, or outdoor hobbies, so consider these factors carefully and make sure everyone in your household will be able to enjoy your landscape—and that they won’t inadvertently damage the plants.
